when imports are allowed, why shouldn't reservation be continued? |
![]() |
Reservation is in respect of local manufacture. Even when an item is imported, it definitely comes in with handicaps when it competes within SSI. This include the need for advertising, need for after sales support, a distribution channel and so on. For imported goods, there is often a high cost associated with all this. Reservation, therefore, protects Indian SSIs from Indian large industry. Nevertheless, we have been conducting a continuous review of reserved items with stakeholders to rationalize this list.

Foreign investment is not going merely into potato chips or papad. It is going into a lot of other areas specially services. At the same time, with the Internet, almost all modern technology is available to many more people and its access is becoming easier. Today there is no lack of opportunity in India to learn or adapt latest processing technology.

Already the SSI sector is continuously passing through the constraints of high cost of fund, non availability of timely and adequate finance, improper marketing facilities etc. Is it not the case that opening up of the economy and exposing the small industries with unequal competition from the MNCs create a non - level playing ground where the MNCs, armed with government policy support and extensive and vigorous advertisement network, merely embezzled the large domestic market? SSI sector being the largest provider of employment in manufacturing sector such unequal competition implies closer of SSI Enterprises resulting in large displacement of workers in the already existing bleak scenerio of employment. Is there any way out of it? |
